Charlton Down 2nds v ASM – Fri 17th May 2017

Won the toss and chose to bat. Rog and Jack made a solid start against what was, to be fair, a somewhat lacklustre bowling attack of ASM, who are only in their second season. In somewhat uncharacteristic fashion, Rog raced to his 50 and went on to make 77 in the 12 overs he was at the crease, including two 6s and 10 4s, before being caught out at deep mid-wicket. With wides pushing up the total this first wicket stand of 146 seemed to set Down in a very comfortable position. In the race for quick runs towards the end of the innings Tim Stevens was stumped for 2 and then Jack was run out for 33 – sacrificing himself instead of youngster Kieran. Bridget wasn’t so sacrificial… and indeed ran out the unlucky Kieran for 2. Bridget reached 7 not out, and Sue, batting for the 2nds for the first time stayed at the crease but without managing to score. The total of 165 for 4 in just 16 overs looked a tough target to beat. It was…

ASM tried to start swiftly but Dan Stevens taking a wicket in his first over rather dampened their efforts. The most disappointed person? Dan… shaking his head for a couple of us appealing with such gusto for LBW… which was given immediately. Thankfully their own bat the other end confirmed that, in his opinion, he didn’t play a shot and it looked set to knock middle stump out the ground! Dan bowled 3 overs 1-7. Mark Purnell 3 overs 0-19. But it was 14 year old Cameron Robinson who took Down’s next wicket, having Proctor caught on 16. Bowling was spread around… Richard Fagence 3 overs 0-22, Kieran Heath 2 overs 0-18, and then new boy Ian Tanner, playing for the first time in 15 years, bowled 3 overs 1-19, with Kieran Heath taking a fantastic catch on the run at mid on. Naran remained undefeated on 34 but this was a great all round victory for the Down as ASM closed on 98-3.
